Skived Fin Heat Sink

Skived Fin heat sinks can be an alternative to extruded heat sinks when looking for a fin density which can’t be achieved by extrusion technology. Skived heat sinks can be manufactured from either copper or aluminum and usually have 0.5 (0.020”) thick fins. Skived heat sinks are produced using a series of sharp knives that, as they pass over the material, curl up a small thickness of metal which is then bent vertically to form the fin.

The Skived fin, also known as skiving technology, simply takes an entire piece of aluminum or copper and uses the special skived machine to cut out fins with standard spacing and a certain thickness and height. Because of using high precision cutting technology, the integration of the forming, relative to other processing technology, the same volume of raw materials can be cut out more heat dissipation area, the heat transfer performance is more stable, in the same condition, the cooling performance is more than 1.5~2 times of the efficiency of traditional bonded fin or soldering heat sink, thus greatly improve heat dissipation efficiency and extend the service life of heating components.

When passing through the machine, slabs are skived at a specific angle so as to form and bend the fins. With the repetitive cutting, it forms consistent gaps and structures and can be used for cooling high-power devices under air-cooled conditions. This process can enhance 8~15% of the cooling capacity as compared to the stitched fin process.

1. Features

The fins are skived out from a plate by cutting a blade.

2. Advantages

1) Skived fin process being able to produce out heat sink in high density, can make the skived fin thinner and denser, with higher heat transfer efficiency, a break through technology and alternative solution for extruded, bonded and swaged heat sink.

2) Good thermal performance almost same as extrusion, Fins and base plate are one connected piece, no thermal resistance in between, because skived fin heat sink is a whole profile without any connection point, which can give full play to the heat dissipation characteristics of the heat sink.

3) Thickness of fins: 0.1mm (Min.) ~ 7.5mm (Max.).
